Historical Designation of the Church
In late May we got a notice that RHUC was to be designated a Historical Building with a long list of items included as being of historical significance. One of the items listed was the dormers which the Board had already signed a contract with roofers to remove to alleviate leaks.
The Historic Building designation came before the Board on June 11 after RHUC representatives had attended a Heritage Richmond Hill Committee meeting. After a full discussion it was determined that we would not appeal the historical designation. We would, however, attempt to get the dormers removed from the items on the designated list, on the basis that for the ceiling to be preserved, the leaks needed to be stopped.
Doug Loweth & DJ McCready held discussions with city staff, Karen Cilevitz (Ward 2), the chair of the Heritage Richmond Hill Committee and Mayor David West. Doug Loweth made a slide and oral presentation to the Heritage Committee & members of Richmond Hill Council on June 18 and they voted unanimously to remove the dormers from the listed historical items. It now goes to Council for final approval on June 25.
RHUC Archives
The Church has received in the mail a booklet, dated approximately 1907 from a donor who obviously wanted us to have it. It includes a number of pictures and written material about the Church at that time. It is fascinating to go through, and it is now in our archives. People interested in the history of the town and the Church as well as those doing genealogy will find this resource fascinating.
