When I think about the many things at Richmond hill United Church that I am grateful for , I find myself thinking about connections.   When someone asked me about joining the finance committee many years ago I was reluctant.   Now  I am glad I said yes.  I have had the opportunity to work with so many of you that I probably wouldn’t know very well if we hadn’t spent time sorting through the accounts.  I have gotten to know some of you very well and I am grateful for your friendship. It is sad that 16th Avenue public school has shut down its Breakfast Club, but still see my old breakfast club team because we’re friends now. I love catching up with my fellow greeters on Welcome Team 3 as we gather in the narthex every 5 weeks and getting to say hello in person to everyone who walks in.  When Dianne and I work on the archives I am happy to report we spend just as much time chatting as we do deciding on whether something is an important historical record or not.

Now I want you to think about the friends you have got to know at Richmond Hill United Church.  While Sunday worship is a key part of our faith formation, often we really get to know each other when we’re doing something outside of Sunday’s service.    So when you get your generous spirit package you will see this survey.  we are asking you to think about how you wish to spend your time as a member of this community of faith in 2023.  We hope you will take the time to complete the survey you will find in your package.

Now three things about our financial position.    First, I want to thank you for 2021.  When I stood up here last year I told you we were falling short. Many of you and your generous spirits responded by sending in an extra gift to the church during last year’s advent season  and we ended 2021 on a positive note. So thank you.

Second, I am happy to report that 2022 has been a better year financially for our community of faith, mainly because our tenants are returning. We are cautiously optimistic that the general fund will have a small shortfall rather than the large one we were expecting.  And if you are in a position to help us eliminate even that small deficit in the next few weeks we would be so grateful.

Third, in your package there is a financial report.  When you read it you will see 2023 will bring new financial challenges.  There is more to say and it is in your generous spirit package!   Lastly I know some people support RHUC with their time, some of you with your talents.  And whether you’re on Par or envelopes, or you give money or securities, or you drop off a cheque or send an e-transfer we are grateful for you.

Again I want to thank all of you for your generous spirits., Jane Ridout
